Thousands of people from the Achterhoek and Zeeland emigrated to the United States in the nineteenth century. One of the descendants of that emigration wave, Mary Risseeuw, is going back to her roots for a while. She'll be in the Netherlands for a couple of weeks to research her Dutch ancestors together her distant cousin Yvette Hoitink (that would be me).

We'll also take this opportunity to give lectures together about the Dutch emigration to the US in the nineteenth century in two different libraries: the Winterswijk library and the Oostburg library.

Content of the lecture

During the lecture, we're going to talk about the reasons why the emigrants left, what became of them and how to research emigrant families.

During the break and after the lecture, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and consult various records about emigrants from these regions.

Time & place

The Winterswijk lecture will be held on Monday September 26, from 8 PM to 10 PM in the Winterswijk public library, Spoorstraat 14, Winterswijk. Entrance: free.

The Oostburg lecture will be held on Monday October 3, from 7.30 PM to 9.30 PM in the Oostburg public library, Langestraat 1a, Oostburg. Tickets are available at the Oostburg public library for 1 euro.
