Nominated for APG board

I have been nominated for a position on the Board of Directors of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG). What an honor! APG members can cast their votes in the members-only section of the APG website between 15 October and 2 November.

The Association of Professional Genealogists is “an international organization dedicated to supporting those engaged in the business of genealogy through advocacy, collaboration, education, and the promotion of high ethical standards.” 1 My APG membership has been very valuable to me. Being an APG member ensures my clients that I subscribe to a code of ethics and that there is an organization to turn to if they are not satisfied with my work.

There are just a few professional genealogists in the Netherlands so finding a group of like-minded people has been wonderful. I have met several APG members in person while attending Who Do You Think You Are? Live! in London and Glasgow the last couple of years.

The other nominees for the board are all amazing genealogists so I doubt many people will vote for a ‘new kid on the block’ like me, but I hope people will give me a chance. There are 17 nominees for 10 seats so the odds aren’t too bad…

I feel I could bring something different to the table, as all the other nominees appear to be native English speakers and most are from the US. I would love to strengthen the international aspects of APG, for example by encouraging collaborations between researchers in ‘immigrant countries’ like the US and Canada and researchers in the countries of origin in Europe, informing people about the specifics of starting a genealogy business in Europe or setting up a Continental European chapter. Let the election commence!
