The seceders emigrate

The bad economic circumstances, together with the bad situation for the Seceders led two prominent ministers of the seceders, Rev. Brummelkamp and Rev. Van Raalte, to the idea of emigration.

Their ideal was to found a Dutch Seceded colony, where people were free to practice their beliefs. They would have their own churches, schools and teachers. First they thought of South-Africa or Java in the Dutch Indies as a suitable place to emigrate. Later they decided on North-America. In one of their brochures, Milwaukee WI in the US is named as the place to gather everyone.

Their initiative was followed by many of the Seceders. They all knew and trusted the ministers. In the Achterhoek, Rev. Brummelkamp had founded most of the Seceded Communities. Many members followed his plan and emigrated to the United States.
