    • Hendrik Jan Esselinkpas en Harriet, zoals Gerritje in Amerika genoemd werd, woonden op hun boerderij in de buurt van Holland, Michigan tot ze oud waren. De lange naam Esselinkpas werd vereenvoudigd tot Pas, waarmee het gezin gewoonlijk werd aangesproken. Op de zuidelijke begraafplaats in Holland, Mich, dichtbij de hoofdweg, is een kleine plattegrond met een steen in het midden met daarop: "Father, H.J.E.Pas, 1813-1901", en de andere "Mother, Harriet, wife of H.J.E.Pas, 1824-1900". Deze bescheiden steentjes markeren de laatste rustplaats van de stoffelijke resten van Hendrik Jan Esselinkpas, de enige overlevende van de Phoenix die in Michigan is gaan wonen, en van Harriet, zijn vrouw.

    Letter by Samuel Esselinkpas of Holland, MI to William O Van Eyck telling the story of how his father survived the Phoenix disaster on Lake Michigan on November 21, 1847. He describes how his father traveled with his brother and his family, all of whom perished in the disaster. It also mentions his mother's sister's family (Koffers).

    On November 21, 1847, the propeller Phoenix perished on Lake Michigan, a couple of miles off the shore from Sheboygan. About 250 people died and only 43 people survived. Most of the passengers were Dutch immigrants.

    • Hendrik Jan was in Winterswijk lid van de Christelijke Afgescheiden Gemeente. Hij was op 14 september 1841 aangenomen als lidmaat. Hij vertrok in 1847 naar Amerika.
