Here are some of my favorite photos of Christmas in the Netherlands, from the collection of the National Archives in the Netherlands (CC-BY). You can click through to see the photos on the National Archives website. To all of you who celebrate Christmas this weekend: Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Yvette
My husband’s great-grandparents were from the Netherlands, great grandfather from Overijsel. They moved to Michigan, USA in one of the groups that founded the Dutch colonies in Michigan. His grandfather was disowned by the family because he married a Catholic and dropped the “n” at the end of his name. Consequently he does not know much about how his family might have celebrated Christmas. It would be great if you would write a column about how the Dutch celebrate Christmas, past and present.
Merry Christmas, Yvette! Thank you for your informative posts. Have a grand new year.
My niece’s Dutch in-laws in Canada have their family celebration on Dec 26. Is this a Dutch tradition or do you think that it is specific to this family?
