Dutch Genealogy News for June 2019

Here is an overview of the new sources, projects, and news about archives that were announced last month.

Online records

  • The burgher records of Zierikzee for 1302 to 1810 are now available via the Zeeuwen Gezocht section of the Zeeuws Archief website.
  • Tholen prison records (1830-1888) have been scanned and indexed and are now available at the Tholen archives website.
  • The Schiedam marriage records 1576-1811 have been scanned and can be browsed at the Schiedam genealogy website (DTB section).
  • Records of the Norbertine Abbey of Berne are now online at the Brabants Historisch Informatie Centrum website. The records date from 1134 to 1857.
  • The Royal Library scanned the Friend’s Book of Jacob Heyblocq, which contains entries by the who’s who of the 1600s: Rembrandt, Joost van den Vondel, Jacob Cats, Constantijn Huijgens, and others. The book can be viewed in the gallery of the Royal Library.

Websites

  • The Dutch Prize Papers website allows you to search the documents seized by the British navy from enemy ships from 1652 to 1815.

Archives and libraries

  • An unknown document about the student years of the painter Rembrandt van Rijn was discovered by the Leiden university Library. His rematriculation of 1622 proves he studied at Leiden for longer than had been assumed.
  • The Royal Library acquired the reward letter for the murder of William of Orange, the founding father of the Netherlands, in 1584. King Philip II of Spain had set a prize on his head, and Balthasar Gerards’ family claimed the reward in 1590.
