Quick Tip – Is that Dutch Name Male or Female?

If you’re not Dutch, you may wonder if a first name is male or female. You can consult the First Name Database to search for the name. It will give you statistics on how many men (“m”) and women (“v”) had that name in the past 100 years. You can see a graph that shows the popularity of the name over time. You can even click “verspreiding” to see the provinces where the name is most popular.

Yvette is predominantly a female name, which was the most popular in the 1970s.

  1. When a name ends with “je” or “ie” it’s female. For example: Jan (male) – Jannigje / Jannetje (female). Pieter (male) – Pietje (female). Teunis (male) – Teuntje (female). Willem (male) – Willempje (female).
Ending with an ‘a’ can be a clue, too. For example: Cornelis (male) – Cornelia / Neeltje (female). Anthonie / Anthonis (male) – Anthonia (female). Wilhelmus (male) – Willemina / Willemijntje (female). Gerrit (male) – Gerdina (female). Adrianus / Adriaan / Arie (male) – Adriana / Adriaantje (female). Hendrik (male) – Hendrika / Hendrina (female).

  2. Marion Vosburg says

I have reason to believe my ancestry is Dutch, due to the spelling of older members names,
Original name spelled Vosburgh, the h was dropped around 1900. The farthest back we have records of is 1761 birth of great grandfather Isaac Vosburgh in New York, US. Served in Revolutionary war.
    Thanks,
    Marion

  3. Just wondering if anyone can confirm if the name Marnius is male?

    Many thanks,
    Kim

  5. Can someone please help me to know if this name is male or female?

    Levenloos geboren kind Jansen Hendriks

  6. Male Yvette says

    Hi,

Is there a male version of the name Yvette? My name is very difficult to read and pronounce as a foreigner but it’s actually quite close to how Yvette is pronounced. So I wanted to say that in some awkward situations that I can’t always explain my name and it’s getting really tiring to do so each and every day to every single person I meet. Why I don’t actually prefer Yvette I’d because I’m male and Yvette is dominantly a female name, I believe.

    Thank you.

  7. Gwen Kersten says

  8. Beverly Lackenbauer says

Thank you for having so much information on Dutch names. I had 5 Dutch uncles so grew up in a Dutch community in Ontario, Canada. I’ve been trying to work on these uncles genealogies. Your site has been a big help for me with names for these relatives. There is still a few I haven’t found but I’ll keep looking. One is Tine de Jong. I’m wondering if it should be Teine and I’m thinking this person is a female? Your help would be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Beverly Peer Lackenbauer
PS My Peer line came from Nederlanden (Holland) also. It was spelled Pier pre American Revolutionary War.

  9. I have found personal names of an apparently married couple from a genealogy search. These names are from the 1500’s, so they were “not found” in this more recent database. The spelling may have been translated incorrectly over the years also. Here they are…

    Geryt

    Gysbertgen

Which is male and which, female?

  10. Elizabeth says

I tried the first name database but I guess this is either spelled wrong or is just totally unsual. Have you ever heard of the name: Rageltje? could it be spelled wrong? That is a G for the third letter by the way. I need to know if it is male or female. If you think it was misinterpreted by someone trying to decipher a name and just didn’t read it correctly then please give me the closest name to this that you think it was supposed to be and then which would it usually be a male or female name. I really appreciate your help so much! thank you. Hope to hear from you by email as I am not sure I will be able to find this site again. blessings:) Elizabeth
