Dutch term – Landmeter

A landmeter is a surveyor. Landmeters were not only called in to record new borders, but also when there was a dispute about borders or property ownership. Their records can often be found in town records or in the court records.

Thank you sooo much for sharing your information. We have many ancestors from the Netherlands and what you share is very helpful when doing research. We are coming to your country the end of August to continue research and find the places some of them lived. I also did attend your session in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I am looking at some census records and wondering why some of the names have been crossed out.
Thanks again for all that you share.

    • Thanks, that’s so nice to hear. The “census records” you’re looking at are probably population registers. These were kept for a period of time, not as a snapshot. People who moved away or wbo died got crossed out.
